ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT Review in 2023

Choosing the right cardio equipment for your home gym can be a daunting task. Do you want to run? Or bike? Or do you need something less efficient? Will it help you achieve your goals or will it just sit in a corner and collect dust? How to get the most return on investment? The ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT offers a recumbent exercise bike and elliptical trainer in one machine.

While it’s certainly not my best bike or elliptical on its own, I think this trainer is a great value for those looking for versatility, space efficiency, and inexpensive cardio options.

As you’ll see in this ProForm Hybrid review, there’s a lot to like here, but also some things you should know before you buy.

Main feature:

  • $599 or $16 per month for 36 months.
  • The versatile two-in-one design allows for a seamless transition from elliptical to stationary bikes.

This increases the versatility of your workout without significantly increasing the footprint of the equipment or financial investment.

Follow a variety of global and studio classes, from strength training to yoga and more, on your tablet or smartphone from the comfort of your home.

Advantages of the hybrid trainer

ProForm’s motto is: “We train to live.” The Hybrid XT seems to fit the bill well, as it offers users much more workout versatility as you can use it as an elliptical or as a recumbent. There are several reasons why this is useful.

For example, flexibility in the way you exercise can reduce fatigue. You have twice as many ways to move your body, so you can change the type of exercise from one day to the next.

This versatility also offers physical benefits. By mixing up the types of physical activity you do, your muscles, bones, joints, and connective tissues are subjected to different forces and movements, resulting in a more rounded and functionally stronger body.

Similarly, varying the types of movements you perform will reduce the risk of overuse injury.

For example, if you’re prone to knee pain or have knee arthritis that can flare up, daily exercise on a Proform Hybrid Trainer XT can make your condition worse. However, you can reduce the stress on your knees if you alternate some exercise on the stationary bike with your elliptical. Using a stretcher is a non-weight-bearing activity and is therefore very easy on the joints.

Each movement is a form of low-impact exercise, so it’s a great cross-training exercise for people with joint pain.

It’s also worth noting that ProForm is owned by the parent company that owns other quality home exercise equipment brands like NordicTrack-ICON Health & Fitness.

Why should you trust us?

I have personally assembled and tested some of the best trainers and ellipticals on the market. As a team, we’ve put our hands (or usually our feet) on nearly 100 cardio machines.

When testing, we use a thorough methodology to evaluate and score each one. We look at factors such as durability, performance, warranty, customer reviews, and footprint.

After assembling the machine, I used the Proform Hybrid Trainer for a series of exercises to evaluate the machine’s performance. I tested it with and without iFIT programming and ran it around in tight spaces to see if it would work for those who need wearables.

A quick look at the ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT

ProForm is a leading provider of quality fitness equipment for home gyms. The motto of this brand is “We train to live”. I think the combination is a good example of that. It’s a machine that fits into your life by giving you options: use it as an elliptical or as a recumbent.

My tips

  • Since you will be sitting and standing on this device, place it in an area with sufficient headroom.
  • I like that this is a space saver if you want a bike and elliptical, but it’s still a fairly large piece of equipment that you don’t need to move around much, so plan on parking and leaving.
  • Pros & Cons

    Pros
    • 2 in 1 low impact cardio machineIt’s affordable at less than $1,000Adjustable display for viewing on a trainer or elliptical

    • Interactive training session with iFIT

    • Trainers automatically adjust the resistance as you go

    Cons
    • The elliptical’s 15-inch stride length may be uncomfortable for taller users

    • Keeping the device in rooms without air conditioning will void the warranty

    • Some returns may cost $250

Is the elliptical trainer worth it?

The ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT is designed as an elliptical trainer and recumbent bike. As a result, it offers superior versatility, space efficiency, and financial savings compared to purchasing two separate cardio machines.

The ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT is perfect for people who want an affordable, versatile, and compact home or garage fitness trainer, but don’t need top-of-the-line equipment.

For this reason, the hybrid bike/elliptical trainer is particularly suitable for beginners who want to improve their aerobic fitness classes but are not planning any competitive performance or particularly intensive cardio training.

Since both cycling and elliptical training are low-impact forms of exercise, this equipment is suitable for anyone who needs to reduce joint stress and strain, and you can get a full-body workout with a Proform Hybrid Trainer XT.

Additionally, the ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT, like most Proform and NordicTrack trainers, is designed for users who want to train alongside top-of-the-line iFit trainers in outdoor or studio sessions or on virtual tracks located in locations around the world were filmed via iFit streaming exercise.

With an iFit membership, you can stream your personal workouts to your tablet at any time for an immersive training experience. Tablet not included.

iFit automatically records every workout and uses your stats and preferences to influence future fitness plans.

In addition, the ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT is fully integrated with the iFit platform to help you achieve your training goals. All you have to do is connect your own tablet to the built-in tablet holder, enter your account information, and then choose any of the thousands of streaming live and on-demand expert personal trainers’ global workouts and world-class training education.

The great thing about the ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT is that it offers an interactive workout via iFit. When the iFit personal training sets a specific resistance on your machine, the ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT will automatically control itself according to the personal trainer’s instructions, rather than manually setting the machine.

Whether you’re doing an elliptical workout or using a bike component, all you have to do is keep up and focus on your workout rather than worrying about adjusting the hybrid trainer XT’s resistance.

Is the ProForm XT Hybrid Trainer worth buying?

This hybrid trainer is a great addition to some home gyms, but not for everyone. See who likes it and who’s leaving.

Good for:

  • For those who want variety in their cardio workouts
  • Exercise bike with limited space
  • Individuals with a limited budget
  • Beginner
  • No need to go to personal training sessions that cost a fortune and only last half an hour

Not recommended for:

  • For those who prefer a treadmill or stationary bike for cardio training.
  • Tall people with short strides.

Who shouldn’t buy ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT?

Finally, it’s important to realize that the ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT is truly designed as a hybrid trainer and not as a standalone elliptical or recumbent. This means that while the ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT definitely serves its purpose by allowing you to do both elliptical and stationary bikes on the same piece of equipment, it’s not the best elliptical or recumbent bike.

If you intend to use the machine primarily as an elliptical trainer, it probably makes sense to buy a regular one for the same price. This hybrid trainer doesn’t have the adjustable incline of an elliptical trainer.

If you plan to use it primarily as an exercise bike, investing the same amount of money in a standard exercise bike will get you a much better exercise bike.

For these reasons, the ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT is not ideal for people who want a premium hybrid trainer or a high-end stationary bike, as you will end up sacrificing the features and performance of each of these features over the ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT. to purchase a separate machine at the same price.

Additionally, the ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT may not be suitable for taller users. Previous versions of this machine had a 350-pound capacity, but the latest version has a much lower 250-pound capacity. Also, the stride length of 15 inches on the elliptical is usually too short for taller users.

While it’s not an exact science, people over 70 inches (5 feet, 10 inches) tend to feel more comfortable using a Hybrid Trainer with a stride length of at least 18 inches, as it more closely mimics their natural stride length. The stride length of 15 inches is definitely shorter for elliptical trainers and matches most compact elliptical trainers.

Also, the ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT may not be the best investment for a home gym for very active and fit users. While the build quality is good given this is a budget cardio machine, it may not hold up to particularly heavy or heavy use. There are also limited resistance levels so if you’re strong you can quickly hit the highest level, and the elliptical has no incline.

Additionally, the flywheel in the machine weighs only 13 pounds, which also limits the machine’s potential drag, and some users have complained that the ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT wobbles a bit when pedaling at high speeds, especially when the intensity level is increased to top speed elliptical part of the machine.

This doesn’t seem to be a problem at more moderate paces, but can be problematic for higher-level athletes.

Another factor to consider is having enough space for the car. While the ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT is much more compact than a standalone elliptical plus a standalone exercise bike, the ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT’s footprint is still quite large.

You must also have high enough ceilings to provide enough headroom when standing on the pedals. For these reasons, the elliptical machine is not a good buy for those who don’t have the right amount of space to safely and fully use the trainer.

Finally, an iFit subscription is required to use the ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT. There are no built-in workout programs, and you can’t even access manual workout mode without manually setting up the device, which might even void your warranty.

So if you want to do your own self-paced low-impact cardio workout, use pre-programmed workouts, or don’t want to purchase an ongoing iFit subscription, the ProForm Hybrid Trainer XT isn’t the best piece of fitness equipment you can buy.

Using the ProForm XT Hybrid Trainer

To be honest, I didn’t expect to like this car. Whether you think of it as a Proform Hybrid Trainer or just a bike, it’s not exactly cutting edge. Actually, it’s pretty basic. But once you start moving, you might be pleasantly surprised, just like me.

First of all, this isn’t the machine for you if you want to do super-intense cardio. For example, if you are preparing for a cycling competition, I would recommend looking at other exercise bikes. But if you just want a car that gets your heart pumping and you have multiple users or just love having options, then I really like the hybrid.

Programming

Access to iFIT trainers and programs is a game changer. I have used iFit to test equipment such as the ProForm Pro 9000 treadmill, as well as many other ProForm and NordicTrack equipment. I also have an app on my phone so I can do yoga or weight training without equipment.

The hybrid syncs with iFit, but it’s not as sexy as you might see on the NordicTrack Commercial 14.9 elliptical’s fancy touchscreen. Instead, the Hybrid uses a Bluetooth connection with your phone.

So you need a smart device to use On-Demand Activities (that fits perfectly in your car’s tablet holder). However, once connected, iFit controls the device and adjusts the resistance for you, whether you’re training on a bike or a fitness machine.

If you don’t want to pay for an iFit subscription (which isn’t really that expensive; the individual plan is only $15 a month), you can use the built-in workout programs. There are eight cycling programs and eight elliptical programs. The main LCD helps you navigate between options and provides feedback throughout your workout.

Assembly

Most reviews report that the elliptical machine is easy to assemble, even by yourself, although two people make the job much easier as some of the parts are quite heavy. The instructions are reportedly clear and easy to on equipment workouts follow.

Most people can assemble an elliptical in one to two hours. ProForm also offers in-home assembly if you’re not the DIY type. Third-party suppliers such as Amazon may also offer white glove delivery and assembly services, but you must confirm this at the time of purchase.

To work

There are 16 resistance levels which I find to be enough for what I want to do. The flywheel weighs 13 pounds—definitely not the heaviest or most durable by a long shot. However, I felt that the device moved well enough during the workout.

There is no side-to-side movement when cycling. When using it as an elliptical trainer, you may notice a slight vibration. I weigh about 140 pounds and the elliptical had a bit of movement as I picked up speed. It’s light and not worrisome, but it’s there and can be more pronounced in heavier users.

There may be an adjustment period when using this 2-in-1 device. When you use it as a bicycle, the motion is more of a back-and-forth push than traditional pedaling because the bike pedals are in front of you, not under you. When you get it, it feels more fluid.

Size

The overall dimensions of Trainer Hybrid ProForm are very large. It is 60.5 inches high, 24.5 inches wide, and 70.5 inches long from front to back. The device does not fold at all. However, it has transport wheels on the front to help you move it around.

The bike/elliptical weighs 117 pounds, making it easy for one person to maneuver using the transport wheels, although smaller people may prefer assistance.
