You need to know how to replace a treadmill belt, so let’s take a look. Treadmills are great for getting in shape, losing weight, and pushing yourself to the limit while exercising. That is until they penetrate you.
The treadmill belt will probably fail first. You interact directly with it, press on it while you run, and with long-term use, it simply takes away the pain. Fortunately, you can replace the belt and your treadmill will most likely return to normal operation. Parts like the motor or console will last for years, while the belt will need to be replaced every few years, depending on usage.
Signs Your Treadmill Belt Is Worn Out
Remember that even the best treadmills can break and it’s not always obvious when a treadmill belt is worn out.
You should check it regularly to make sure it’s safe to use, and there are a few important things to look out for:
Check for slippage
The belt on your treadmill can slip, which means it accidentally pushes you forward as you run. This can make it difficult or even dangerous to use. If you notice a problem, you should turn off the treadmill and check the slack. If the strap stretches more than a few inches, it needs to be tightened.
Check for lubrication
Your belt needs proper lubrication to run smoothly on the pulleys. You can lift the belt by hand and check if the wax on the underside of the belt has worn off or has dried for a long time. You may need to completely remove the belt to properly inspect it.
Check for smoothness
It’s easy to tell if your belt is worn or frayed, but it’s just as important to look for smooth, worn areas from friction. You should remove the belt and examine it carefully, looking for any dark spots that are worn. You should run your hand over it and see if it smooths out in different places.
Flip the deck
Some treadmill decks are designed to be flipped so you can get more use out of them (like flipping the mat). You should check the deck to make sure there are no cracks as this may mean you need to replace it entirely.
When Should You Replace A Treadmill Belt?
We’ve covered several ways to check your treadmill belt, but you can easily find out if you need to replace your belt by using it. If it’s shaking you up or affecting your overall performance, it probably needs to be replaced.
Likewise, your belt can become damaged if it becomes significantly easier or harder to walk on. Another noticeable sign is that if it feels hot to the touch, you absolutely must replace it.
In some of these cases, you may only need to tighten the treadmill belt, but the entire belt may need to be replaced.
No matter what type of treadmill you have, you should always check your running belt every 6 months, even if there are no obvious problems. This helps you catch problems early so you can make repairs before they become a complete failure. Treadmills should be replaced every 3 to 5 years, but that depends on how often you use them.
Replacing a treadmill belt
It’s time to replace the treadmill. To do this, you need tools, guidance, and trust. If at any point you are unsure of your abilities, step back, reread the manual, and maybe sleep on it before trying again.
Let’s get into that.
Tools and Equipment
First, we must have the right tools for the job. Nothing too crazy, but make sure you prep them.
- Screwdriver set
- Marker with a felt tip (this will make sense)
Make sure you have open space on a flat surface (the middle of your living room floor will do). Some clearance is required to move these parts. Also, make sure you have a basket or two available to hold small items so they don’t roll under the sofa and get lost forever.
1. Turn off the treadmill
Before doing any of these things, first, unplug the treadmill from the wall. It sounds like common sense, but better safe than sorry.
On top of the motor housing at the front of the treadmill, you will see a plastic cover. Remove it to reveal all wiring. Here you should see where all the wires are connected. Take a picture with your phone and disconnect the cables.
2. Mark the Roller
There are screws on the front and back of the treadmill. They help hold the reel in place and indicate the position of the front reel attached to the motor. Use your market to bookmark these locations so we don’t forget them later.
3. Loosening the Belt
The protection is attached to the belt. You can use the bolt and nut to loosen and then remove the adjustment bolts on the front and back of the reel. Note: Your treadmill may have something called safety protection.
Check it out any way you can. You must remove this item before proceeding, which requires removing the staple. This is where the pliers in your toolbox come in handy.
4. Loosen the deck screws.
Turn the treadmill on its side (you do not need to remove the console to complete this part). Below are the screws that attach the treadmill floor to the treadmill. Remove these screws and set them aside for safekeeping.
5. Remove the roller
There are caps on the rear roller to hide the screws. You will be able to see them relatively easily. Open the end caps and remove the roller from the back of the treadmill.
6. Separate motor belt
Separate from the engine belt guard. Now it’s time to take it out of the car and check it out. See how much wear has occurred, make a note of it for later, and start planning how often you’ll need to replace your engine belt in the future.
Most engine belts can be replaced for next to nothing, so while it’s not expensive, it’s definitely a difficult process that you don’t want to do too often. They change the belt every 6-12 months. It is important to know when to expect the next replacement.
7. Replace the belt
Gone is the old belt, long live the new belt! Now all you have to do is install it. Attach the new strap, making sure it is as taut as possible.
It should be right in the middle of the treadmill so you don’t have a problem. You can confirm this by looking at the underside of the treadmill.
8. Replace the roller
Now put on the rear roller and secure it with a bolt. It should be tight. It’s very hard to tighten or overdo it here, so just make sure it doesn’t move or loosen while you’re running on the treadmill.
When replacing the roller, check the plastic wear (if there are no plastic parts on the roller or if it has a lot of scratches). Write it down so you know if it needs to be replaced the next time the belt is changed.
9. Tighten and check
Now that everything is back in place it’s time to tighten everything up and see if everything works fine. Just re-engineer how you loosened these pieces in the previous steps and see how much you tightened them. Sometimes you just need to loosen it up a bit if there’s a problem with testing.
Walk on the treadmill for about three to five minutes without pedaling. Just let it go and see how it feels. Then try to walk along it and make sure the caterpillar is in place.
Top Brands: Treadmill Belt Replacement Instructions
Each brand and model of treadmill is built slightly differently and you should always read the manufacturer’s manual and follow their instructions.
Here are some tips for leading brands:
Proform treadmills have 3 screws on the front of the treadmill and 2 screws on each side of the front. You need to remove all of these before you can remove the engine cover.
Then you need to lift it off the ground and remove the 4 screws from one side of the base. This allows a side cover to be removed.
You can then remove any other screws on the side you removed the side panel from. You need a wrench to loosen the screws. You can now lift the treadmill and remove the belt to replace it.
To remove a Weslo treadmill belt you should follow the general steps listed above, but be sure to check the manufacturer’s manual for specific instructions. The only real difference is that you have to use a hex wrench to loosen the treadmill belt. The tape is separated from the upper roller.
To remove the treadmill from the Nordictrack, you need to remove the side rails, which simply pop out once the treadmill is lowered. Then you need to remove the waste reel from the back of the machine by loosening the screws of the waste reel. You can then remove the drive pulley from the belt so you can slide the belt off the board.
What is the average lifespan of a treadmill?
According to the manufacturer, the average lifespan of a treadmill is around 10 years. However, if you take proper care of your treadmill and lubricate the belt regularly, you can achieve a longer lifespan. However, some parts can still fail, and that doesn’t mean you need a new device.
When should I replace my treadmill belt?
You should check your belt for signs of wear at least every three months. To check for wear, run your hand on the underside of the belt. If the belt feels worn and rough, you may need to replace it with a new one.
How long does a treadmill belt last?
Generally, a single-ply treadmill will last between 300 and 500 hours depending on how it is maintained. This is around 3-5 years for the average user. The double layer belt lasts 5 to 10 years longer.
Is it worth fixing my treadmill?
Does the treadmill need repair? It depends on how you use it, but yes, it costs more to repair them than to replace them. Depending on the damage that has occurred, a simple belt replacement may not require a major overhaul.
Are all treadmill belts the same size?
Belt Size You can find belts that are 13 to 22 inches wide and 40 to 60 inches long. In general, machines with larger belts cost more. Also, you are dedicating floor space to your treadmill, so it makes a lot of sense to choose the right size rather than going with the biggest treadmill.
How can you tell if a treadmill belt is worn out?
Run your hand along the bottom and top to check for signs of excessive wear. This can be in the form of discoloration or extreme smoothness.
The discoloration of most treadmills looks dark and almost black. And if some areas are too slippery, it could be a sign that the treadmill needs to be replaced.
